Cuchubal Match
Program

Namaste’s Cuchubal Match (CM) leverages the popular «cuchubal» savings club model in Guatemala to empower women with poor credit, who are often ineligible for loans through Namaste’s CPP or other lending institutions. By matching 100% of their savings, the CM program incentivizes these women to save, learn about Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE), and build a brighter future.

How the Cuchubal Match Works:

  • Group Formation: Each cuchubal group consists of six women who commit to saving a fixed monthly amount, ranging from $10 to $30, based on their income, for six months.
  • Savings & Payouts: Participants bring their savings to each monthly WEE class, where one woman receives the collective payout. For example, in a group where each woman saves $20 per month, the payout is $120 each month, distributed on a rotating basis.
  • Education & Coaching: Women attend monthly WEE classes for six months and participate in one-on-one coaching sessions with a Namaste Business Advisor. These sessions focus on guiding participants to invest their CM funds in their businesses, budget effectively, and pay down debts.
  • Matching Savings:At the end of the six-month cycle, Namaste matches each woman’s total savings, provided they have fully participated in the program.

How the Cuchubal Match Works:

  • Women can complete up to two six-month cycles of the CM program. After completing two cycles, participants who require additional capital for business growth become eligible for a loan through Namaste’s CPP, regardless of their debt history or credit scores.
  • At the end of the six months, CM participants will receive approximately the same amount as a Cycle 1 loan in Namaste’s CPP—an average of $240 ($120 saved by the group and $120 matched by Namaste as a grant). This infusion of capital, combined with WEE education on interest calculation and avoiding predatory lenders, along with ongoing coaching from Namaste staff, empowers women to break free from the cycle of debt and poverty.

Armed with financial education and the power of collective savings, these women are forging a new path to economic prosperity for themselves and their families.
